Backcountry & Nordic Center Staff

This position runs from the end of November through the beginning of April

Job Summary:  To outfit guests with appropriate Nordic, alpine touring, splitboarding, fatbiking, or snowshoe rental and demo equipment, book and schedule guiding and instruction services, give insight regarding said equipment and services, provide trail and condition information to guests, and run cash register to sell all rental and retail products.

Essential Functions:  

  1. Provide excellent customer service to every person who enters the BV Backcountry and Nordic Sports Center
  2. Sell equipment rentals, retail items, lessons and guiding services, and lift tickets while presenting guests with opportunities for purchasing additional Bolton Valley products and services
  3. Assist guests in selecting appropriate ski, splitboard, fatbike, or snowshoe rental equipment
  4. Distribute equipment to guests
  5. Provide information about trail conditions, terrain, and equipment that will best suit each guest
  6. Assist in the overall cleanliness and functionality of the Sports Center
  7. If possible and necessary, occasionally provide supplemental Nordic trail grooming service - may train if necessary.

NOTE:  All Bolton Valley employees are required to perform alternate functions from time to time, both within and outside of their assigned department, particularly during peak periods such as holiday weekends. 

Customer Service Expectations:  This position involves constant, direct customer contact: answering questions, selling products, determining the proper size for equipment, explaining the process of putting the equipment on, etc.    Employee is expected to be courteous and professional in accordance with Bolton’s commitment to providing superior customer service.

Qualifications: 

  • High school education
  • Friendly, outgoing personality
  • Working knowledge and understanding of Nordic, alpine touring, splitboarding, fatbiking, snowshoeing, or any combination thereof preferred
  • Previous instruction experience with any or all of the above preferred
  • Previous customer service experience preferred
  • Previous cash handling experience helpful
  • Previous trail grooming experience a plus

Required Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of ski, splitboard, fatbike, and snowshoe equipment
  • Experience skiing and/or boarding in a variety of conditions and terrain 
  • Ability to complete tasks quickly and under pressure
  • Patience, kindness, and an appreciation for outdoor winter activity

Physical and Mental Demands: 

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking short distances
  • Minor lifting
  • Occasional snow shoveling and moving of ski racks
  • Occasional exposure to cold temperatures

Work Environment: 

Work is performed primarily indoors but may include outdoor tasks such as moving ski racks, shoveling snow, guiding, and/or teachingNoise levels can be high and space crowded during busy times.  Generally, the BV Backcountry & Nordic Center hosts outdoor enthusiasts that are passionate and excited about the activities provided there – which makes for a positive experience at the workplace.  Bolton Valley is looking to encourage that positivity for employees and guests alike.
