Backcountry & Nordic Sports Center Supervisor

This position runs from the end of November through the beginning of April.

Job Summary:  Responsible for overall supervising and staff of Backcountry and Nordic Sports Center - overseeing and assisting with all aspects of operating the Nordic and Backcountry Center, as well as the Sports Center bar, pool area, skate bowl, field house and all public areas.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Assist in planning, implementing, and managing all aspects of the BV BC & Nordic Sports Center including; BC and Nordic skiing and splitboarding rentals, fatbike and snowshoe rentals, scheduling and booking guiding and instruction services, ticket sales and checking tickets, customer service, keeping trail reports up to date, social media posts, retail sales, etc.
  • Oversee staff responsible for sports center operations including bartending, maintaining public spaces, pool area and restroom cleaning and upkeep, restocking sales offerings and coffee stations, etc.
  • Reviews and enhances food offerings, retail hardgoods and softgoods stock, and other potential sources of revenue at the Sports Center
  • Coordinates with marketing and sales to support plans and goals for all Sports Center activities and to take advantage of cross marketing or package offerings within the resort.  Work with marketing to enhance Sport Center components of resort web site.
  • Responsible for Sports Center cleanliness.  Sports Center staff will be responsible for vacuuming carpets and pool, cleaning bath and locker areas, wiping down exercise equipment, changing light bulbs and washing windows, etc.
  • Develops and implements new or different programming options and ideas with management
  • Observes, monitors, and communicates weather and terrain conditions with regard to customer experience and safety
  • Maintains a current understanding of backcountry, Nordic, biking, and snowshoeing equipment to be able to speak accurately about it to customers.
  • Plans Nordic race events with local high schools, colleges and other Nordic race organizations
  • Networks with individuals and organizations to promote Nordic, Backcountry, and uphill skiing and splitboarding, fatbiking, and snowshoeing at Bolton Valley.  Initiates and develops relationships and/or joint programming with industry groups and suppliers to enhance revenues, promote events and activities and build the Bolton brand
  • When necessary, assist in guiding and/or instructing Nordic and backcountry skiing or riding, snowshoeing, or fatbiking.
  • Supervises a staff of approximately 5+ people
  • Helps oversee trail conditions and maintenance
  • Oversees equipment rental, tickets sales, and booking and scheduling of guiding services, and lessons programs
  • Helps to motivate staff to perform all required services and offerings with a high level of customer service
  • Aggressively seeks to grow winter outdoor programming, activities and revenues, through events such as Nordic training camps, snow-shoe events, Nordic, backcountry or uphill racing events, educational programs, and/or entertainment events.
  • Adheres to all health and liquor laws as required

 

NOTE:  All Bolton Valley employees are required to perform alternate functions from time to time, both within and outside of their assigned department, particularly during peak periods such as holiday weekends.

Qualifications: 

  • College degree preferred
  • A passion for outdoor recreation
  • 1-2 years of prior supervisory experience in a heavily customer-oriented environment
  • Working knowledge and understanding of Nordic, alpine touring, splitboarding, fatbiking, snowshoeing, or any combination thereof preferred
  • Previous instruction experience with any or all of the above preferred
  • Previous trail grooming experience a plus

Required Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Ability to ski or ride safely and confidently in all ski conditions and in varying types of terrain at all times
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Patience, kindness, and an appreciation for outdoor winter activity

Physical and Mental Demands: 

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking short distances
  • Minor lifting
  • Occasional snow shoveling and moving of ski racks
  • Occasional exposure to cold temperatures

 

Work Environment:  Work is performed outside in all weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, wind and rain, on varied snow surfaces, as well as indoors.  Indoor time is spent overseeing and assisting staff and operations and interacting with guests. Some indoor time is also spent on the computer and phone, as well as, cleaning and maintaining the facilities.
